Lyrics - Picture Moodboard

These are some pictures that match the lyrics of my chosen song. They portray the more literal meanings behind some of the words in the lyrics, and therefore give a little bit of insight into what the song is all about.

Lyrics Analysis

I carried out an analysis of the lyrics of my chosen song so I could get a a deeper insight into what the true meaning of the lyrics is. This helped me get some initial ideas of what the style of the music video and the meanings within it should be. Additionally, it gave me some inspiration in relation to the mise-en-scene I could use and when the best times to do edits would be. Therefore, this was a very helpful and key task as part of the planning process.

Lyric Timing

Here I have done the lyric timing for my chosen song. I timed the length of each line in the song. This prepares me for editing, and will make the editing process slightly easier for me. It will also help with the storyboarding process and any lip sync sections of my video.

Chosen Song

For my advanced portfolio, I am going to be using the acoustic version of Foundations by Kate Nash. This is an Indie Pop song, which was released in 2007. Foundations is the lead single on Kate Nash's debut album 'Made of Bricks' and she co-wrote it with Paul Epworth. Following it's release, Foundations reached number 2 on the UK singles chart and remained there for 3 weeks, as well as getting positive reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and The Guardian.
I chose to do this song because its clever lyrics and preppy beat inspired a lot of ideas in me for the video. The way Kate Nash conveys sadness and anger in such a fun, upbeat yet snarky way is very interesting and hooked me on the song, and I really want to capture this feel in my music video. I also decided to do the acoustic version rather than the original because I like more stripped back nature of it, and I want to focus on and incorporate the more raw beat in the video. Also, the acoustic version doesn't have a music video made for it, so I can start completely from scratch and look at the song with an open mind rather than have the temptation to take bits from an original video.

Possible Song Choices

Over the past few weeks I have been considering lots of different song choices to do my music video for. After a lot of thinking and brainstorming of ideas, I narrowed it down to my favourite 6. I feel as though these songs would all be good to work with, as their lyrics are effective, they have good beats to edit to, the length of each song is adequate, and they all have inspired me with ideas for the video. Furthermore, they all fit into the Indie genre which is the genre I was wanting to use for my advanced portfolio.

This is a summary of this week's lessons.
Knowing what audiences consider to be a good music video and why is very beneficial to me because I can apply this when creating my music video. I want my video to look professional and be successful in appealing to audiences so it is necessary to know what audience want to see in music videos so I can adhere to this.
